(Arrival in the evening, Thursday June 21, if you are a non-commuter)

Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32)
Friday, June 22 - Morning 9 to 11 am
THEOLOGY: Starting with Scripture and Homiletics
Scripture - How our Christian tradition is rooted in a Scripture that is Oral, Recited, & Read. (How to make the best use of each approach.)
Sharing the Good News - A difficult challenge: the three goals of teaching & preaching: Evangelization, Catechesis, and Mystagogia. (How to do all three at the same time.)
We can find a model for communicating the Scriptures:
Why the diversity of the Evangelists' message ? MARK (with an emphasis on Oral communication and Evangelization), MATTHEW & LUKE (both with an emphasis on Recited communication, and Catechesis, but in different ways), & JOHN (with an emphasis on Written communication, and Mystagogical exegesis).

Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 30-37)
Friday, June 22 - Afternoon 2 to 4 pm
2. What can we learn from COMMUNICATION STUDIES?
What we have recently discovered on how we listen and absorb what we have heard… There are five steps and we need to respect the sequence of how people hear. Jumping ahead without taking time to absorb will result in our voice not being heard.
How can we communicate to multi-generational audiences?
Understanding the the life cycles of tellers & listeners from childhood to adulthood to elderhood. How we tell shapes the way people listen, and what we can do about it.

Parable of the Sower (Luke 8: 5-8)

Parables of the Lost Coin (Luke 15: 8-10)
Saturday, June 23 - Morning 9 to 11 am
The Art of the Communicating the Gospel message: Six Techniques.
Exploring the Basic Level -- (1) How to "Paraphrase" the Scripture, (2) Using humor appropriately, (3) Delivering the point of the story.
Exploring the Advanced Level -- (4) How to "Parallel" the Scriptures rather than paraphrase, (5) how to be serious without being "pathetic", and (6) How to plant the seed of future reflections, once the message is delivered. All six techniques can be mastered with a little bit of practice.
Asking the important question: "How can I Teach? -- How can I Preach? -- as Jesus Did."
Recognizing Jesus' communication strategy -- starting in the Market Place and ending in at the Banquet Table. Implementing that strategy in our ministry.

Parable of the Shrewd Manager (Luke 16: 1-13)
Saturday, June 23 - Afternoon 2 to 4 pm
The Science of Communicating the Gospel message: A Check List for Your Storytelling
The Basic Tuning can be learned from anthropologists and folklorists who have studied the place and power of storytelling in human communities. The key lessons are three: How to Open & Close a story, How to keep on track, How to best emphasize what is most important in your presentation.
The "Fine" Tuning can be learned from authors and actors who must polish their words to keep the attention of their audiences. The key lessons are four: creating drama, developing characters, describing vividly, and creating a sense of dialogue that engages your listeners.
